My company partners with Communities in Schools of Wake County and does several service projects with them throughout the year. We work with the children at the Mayview Center who range in age from kindergarten to sixth grade. They really are a joy to work with!
In celebration of Earth Day 2012, our Volunteer Council visited the center on Friday to plant flowers and tomatoes with the kids. We taught the kids about the growth cycle of plants and helped them plant marigolds and tomatoes.
Each child got to take home their very own tomato plant to take care of over the summer. They were very excited, and it was a beautiful afternoon to celebrate the Earth and how to take care of it.
Personally, this was one of my favorite projects. I love to garden, so sharing how it works with other people was a lot of fun. We had a great time, and I hope that the kids take care of the tomatoes so they can enjoy the benefits of them in a couple of months.
Will you come teach me? I am awful but would love to learn!
